Through the lens of womanhood

Avante Art Foundation was proud to present a screening of the powerful feature documentary Swing and Sway (Vai e Vem), directed by Chica Barbosa and Fernanda Pessoa. Shot between Brazil and the United States, the film is an intimate and poetic portrait of two filmmakers — one based in São Paulo, the other in Los Angeles — as they reflect on migration, motherhood, and their enduring friendship in the face of political unrest and personal transformation.

Through a cinematic dialogue of images, letters, and memories, Swing and Sway offers a unique lens on contemporary womanhood, diasporic identity, and the search for belonging across borders.

Following the screening, attendees were invited to a community conversation about the film’s themes and process, honoring the directors’ commitment to telling stories that are at once deeply personal and politically resonant.

This screening was part of Avante Art Foundation’s ongoing commitment to showcasing international voices and fostering cross-cultural understanding through the arts.
