Avante Art Foundation hosted a special screening of Swing and Sway (Vai e Vem), a feature documentary directed by Chica Barbosa and Fernanda Pessoa. Shot between Brazil and the U.S., this poetic and political film explores identity, migration, and the power of female friendship. A conversation followed with insights into the film’s cross-cultural themes. Produced by Vulcana Cinema and distributed in Brazil by Boulevard Filmes.

Through the lens of womanhood

Avante Art Foundation was proud to present a screening of the powerful feature documentary Swing and Sway (Vai e Vem), directed by Chica Barbosa and Fernanda Pessoa. Shot between Brazil and the United States, the film is an intimate and poetic portrait of two filmmakers — one based in São Paulo, the other in Los Angeles — as they reflect on migration, motherhood, and their enduring friendship in the face of political unrest and personal transformation.

Through a cinematic dialogue of images, letters, and memories, Swing and Sway offers a unique lens on contemporary womanhood, diasporic identity, and the search for belonging across borders.

Following the screening, attendees were invited to a community conversation about the film’s themes and process, honoring the directors’ commitment to telling stories that are at once deeply personal and politically resonant.
